i had a set of these from harbor freight cheapo store and decided to get a better set. If you are not familiar with these they are one of the best tools you can have in your box. Need to drill a hole to attach a hinge, slide, bracket, or anything like that? this is the perfect bit for the job. Guarantees a perfectly centered hole. No more marking where you think the center of the hole is, then hoping the bit doesn't drift and then the flange of the head of the screw moving your bracket because the hole is off. This bit forces the hole to be perfectly centered with no marking or measuring, every time. I love it.

why the hell didn't anyone tell me these things existed before? i've been killing myself trying to drill holes centered in fixed locations for years. this makes it trivial, even if you have to drill the hole at an angle to increase the screw's bite. a must have in a DIY toolkit

No more wonky hinge and bracket screws for me. Wish I had bought these 20yrs ago. The problem isn't measuring and pre drilling by hand is impossible. It's that even the best start on a pre drilled hole will walk when hitting the grain lines of the wood. This locks the bit in place so that bit walk is almost eliminated.

Used these in replacing 3 interior doors. Much easier for installing the hinges but they really helped out when the strike plates had to be adjusted. Normally I would fill the old screw holes with a golf tee and glue to start over but was in a rush and used the self centering drills to drill a pilot hole close to the old holes. The screws tightened up straight and did not wander over to the old holes. Did not have a problem with drill shavings jamming up the barrel. A pleasure to use.

I've bought two other sets for half the price on Amazon and ran into various drawbacks with each. These bits have none of those drawbacks, and I highly recommend them. Firstly, the springs are nice and stiff so the centering sleeve is always the first thing to make contact with the work surface. Other bit sets on Amazon have weak springs and, as a result, the drill bit hits the worksurface first which pretty well makes it behave like a standard bit. The way the spring is retained inside the sleeve is absolutely the proper way to do it. Other bit sets I've bought have the spring engage in a manner that it can wedge itself between two surfaces thereby binding the spring "closed" at the tip which reduces the tension on the sleeve. To fix that you have to disassemble and unbind things which totally ruins your workflow. In conclusion, don't make the same mistake I made and buy these instead of any others on Amazon. Those other generic ones are half the cost, but virtually useless for their intended function.

So happy I purchased these, beforehand I was using a punch and drill and then still at times wasn't truly centered, this takes the guess work out of it and makes it easy to drill holes in the center. I've mostly used this for building slide out shelves, once I know I have the slide in place I drill one hole, put a screw in to hold, then drill the other holes then fully screw the slide in. I know I could use a 1/4" bit extension but that would make it longer than I'd like - best bet is to just have my drill and impact right there instead of swapping bits constantly in a chuck.

I'm putting T-Track in the top of one of my workbenches, and I needed to drill pilot holes that were dead center so the head of the screw would sit flush. With these self centering drill bits, it is so easy! One piece of track has 20 screws, and it took me about 30 seconds to drill perfectly centered pilot holes in all of them. These are designed basically for cabinet hardware, so the hole that is drilled is not that deep, but it works perfectly for what I bought them for.

These self centering bits work great. I have used them several times to install hinges on some woodworking projects. The place the hole dead center and function smoothly. I like that they have the hex shaft that will fit an impact driver which increases the versatility because I can use them with whatever drill or driver I have on hand.

These are fantastic!! My current project required a 36" piano hinge, with 36 screw holes total to be drilled between the 2 leafs. Like others, in the past I have "eye-balled" them, with less than successful results. These bits made the job really easy, and the end result is professional and beautiful. The sleeves, as mentioned by other reviewers, do tend to fill up with saw dust from the bit, but the covers are threaded on, easily removable, and overall do a great job. The drill bits are replaceable, if necessary. These are super bits for the money. I would highly recommend to others!!

I grew up in a cabinet shop, and I was helping my dad not long after I could walk. Here's the deal: I always started screws with a punch that you hit with a hammer. An old German carpenter that went through the guild system before the Second World War taught me to keep a bar of ivory soap in my tool belt. You punch a hole in the center of the butt, coat the screws in soap to lubricate the threads and prevent splitting face frames, and screw away... I used a Yankee screwdriver long before cordless drills became common. Years ago, I got a cheap self-centering drill bit, and chucked it into my (then) high-tech 14 volt cordless drill. The result was worse and slower than what I always did with a hammer. So, I went back to the punch, and I ignored the dirty looks that I got from other finish carpenters. I just figured their disdain for my trusty Stanley punch came from the same ignorance that made them ask me what I needed a coping saw for... Anyways, a couple of presidents have been in office since then, and I really like Bosch tools (I even buy Bosch brand kitchen appliances), so I decided to give it another try. I received these bits about a week ago, and I've used them on probably 2-300 hinges since then. I've gotta tell you, I'm a convert. They are as accurate as they are effortless to use. I have used them on everything from solid mahogany doors to hollow core doors to cabinet doors. They are sharp and they don't gum up with dust. Of course, you could just wing it, like all of the painters do when they put the doors back up. Your screws will all protrude at a funny angle past the face of the hinge, and the doors will all rub the stop in weird places... But, hell... Everyone else does them that way! Or, you could actually act like a real carpenter for once in your life and order these.
